My research is on the challenges of applying phenomenology to domains or topics that it was not originally designed to study, such as psychopathology, somatic illness, race, and gender. In particular, I develop approaches that facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration between phenomenology and the human sciences, especially in psychiatry, clinical psychology, and nursing.
At Oxford, I'm working on a project with Dan Zahavi on the use of phenomenology in nursing, including both qualitative health research and clinical practice. We develop workshops for nursing students and faculty, practicing nurses, and allied health professionals. These workshops provide accessible introductions to phenomenology and its role in understanding patient experience and enhancing patient care.
